NYCC 2026: Building the Universe

Busta Rhymes, Lauryn Hill and Wyclef Jean at Comic COn

From a world to a universe: Hip Hop x Marvel at NYCC 2026

Last year at New York Comic Con, we made the case that hip hop and Marvel belonged on the same shelf. With Mass Appeal and the first Legend Has It release, we built a world where the artists who shaped the culture stood next to the heroes who shaped comics.

This year we wanted something that holds together: characters that cross over, stories that build on each other, and a reason for fans to keep coming back. That's what we built at NYCC 2026 with Mass Appeal, Marvel and Whatnot.

The drops

  • The Dillagence II Hulk #1 variant paired Busta Rhymes and J Dilla with the Hulk, and it was the best-selling item of the show.

  • Legend Has It #2 launched with an X-Men poster, taking the series into Marvel's most storied team.

  • The Fugees' The Score got its own comic art and merch, thirty years after the album dropped.

  • An exclusive Nas x Lauryn Hill capsule, made for the weekend only.

  • Ten-year anniversary reissues of Marvel's 2016 hip hop variant covers, back in print for a new generation of collectors.

  • Anderson .Paak x Cordae comics, with a Peach Momoko variant collectors hunted all weekend.

  • Skate decks that took Legend Has It and Busta x Dilla off the page and onto wood.

The moment nobody planned
It wasn't on the run of show. Busta Rhymes, Lauryn Hill and Wyclef Jean ended up performing together, off the cuff, on Whatnot's main stage.

The rest of the weekend kept surprising us. Slick Rick, Nas, Havoc, Pete Rock, Just Blaze, YG Marley and more came through, and plenty of them went live with us on Whatnot. DMC sold records on stream. Denzel Curry and Erick the Architect sketched original art together, and it was auctioned live.

The booth
It was part merch store, part DJ booth and part livestream studio. We sold live on Whatnot most of the weekend, from the booth and from Whatnot's main stage. People came to shop and didn't leave, because the next artist could walk up at any minute.

What we learned
Fans collect into a story. A Hulk variant means more sitting next to a Score comic, a Legend Has It X-Men poster and a reissue of the covers that started it all. Every drop that connects to the last one makes the next one stronger.

Live commerce turns that story into a relationship. When the artist's in the room and the fan buys while it's happening, the product carries the memory of being there. That's the model we're building: new IP created with artists and IP holders, taken straight to the people who care most.

Last year we built the world. This year we built the universe. Next year's already in the works.

Thank you to Mass Appeal, Marvel, Whatnot and every artist, collector and fan who came through.
